You Walk Through It Every Time
It happens in about two seconds.
In Disneyland, Imagineers have expertly engineered every aspect of the park so that you’ll spend more money with them.
For example…
When you walk down Main Street in the park, it’s hot. There’s no shade. The only refuge from the heat is one of the conveniently placed gift shops selling $30 misting fans and $10 Dasani water bottles.
And when you walk into one of these shops, you’re immediately blasted with a wall of cool air to make you feel a little more comfortable.
That feeling is called an “air curtain.” And there's a decent chance you've never once thought about selling it to your customers.
Curtis Rosol has spent years watching contractors walk past them at his facility.
Curtis works at Mars Air Systems, and he joined Tersh and Josh on the podcast this week to talk about one of the most overlooked efficiency tools in commercial HVAC - a product so common that most people's eyes have learned to skip right over it.
The technology isn't complicated. A unit mounted above an opening pushes a controlled stream of air downward, creating a thermal barrier between inside and outside without requiring a door to be closed.
Originally, people called them "fly fans" - because the first thing building owners wanted was to keep insects out. The energy savings came later.
As commercial buildings convert from gas to electric systems, electricity costs are climbing. Every kilowatt saved by reducing HVAC load becomes more valuable. An air curtain uses roughly the same power as a parking lot light. The ROI math - already reasonable - gets easier every year that electrification advances.
But here's the thing Curtis kept coming back to:
Most contractors are already servicing the exact buildings that need these.
Retail chains. Convenience stores. Warehouses with loading docks. Restaurants where the kitchen door stays propped open. Cold storage facilities where deliveries mean the walk-in stands open for stretches long enough for warm air to enter, condense, and ice over an evaporator coil - which eventually becomes a callback nobody saw coming.
You've been on that callback. You diagnosed the coil. You may not have ever thought to look at the door.
That's the conversation Curtis is trying to start with contractors.
The install is modest. Mount the unit, wire the controls, test the airflow. It's an add-on, not a renovation.
The pitch is even simpler: you're losing conditioned air every time that door opens. There's a fix for that.
You already know the buildings. You already have the relationships.
