How I started our podcast
(& supply chain issues)
Tersh here from Service Business Mastery 👋
I want to tell you the story of how I got into this podcast and turned into a full-on business while also running my HVAC company…
In 2017, I went on Brian Orr’s podcast “HVAC School.” That’s a more technical show, but I enjoyed talking business and started thinking about it more. Brian actually taught me what he knew about podcasting and I turned that knowledge into Service Business Mastery.
Eventually, Josh joined me to co-host and now we have a podcast that rivals our own businesses in growth.

That’s the thing about business…
We pretend like we know exactly what’s going to happen over the next 3 years. We make these big strategic plans and act like everything is going to go according to plan. But the reality is…
Sometimes things take a different turn than you expected. The question is:
“Will you lean in and make the most of it? Or will you shrink when opportunity arrives?”
I had a great conversation with the guest of this week’s podcast episode. His name is Terry McIver, and interview each other in this episode about the state of the industry, what we’re concerned about, and much more.

Take these, implement them right away:
1️⃣ Use margin-based pricing to remove emotion from your rates - when costs increase, let the math drive your decisions rather than feelings about what "seems high."
2️⃣ Offer flexible financing options but recognize that today's customers are more hesitant about taking on debt compared to 2020-2021.
3️⃣ Invest in continuous training to help technicians understand and communicate price changes to customers - what used to be a $120 capacitor now costs several hundred dollars.
The trades are recession-proof and pandemic-proof - while other industries struggled, HVAC remained essential and profitable through unprecedented challenges.
The industry thrives on shared knowledge - from Ron Smith to Ruth King to modern podcasters, HVAC professionals continue the tradition of helping others succeed.
Are you building a business with enough profit margin to create a legacy worth selling, or are you just getting by year after year?
