Escalating To A Human
You can do that?
What's your after-hours coverage actually doing right now?
Because "we have an answering service" and "every call gets handled" are not the same sentence. You know it. I know it. The service takes a message. The message sits. The customer calls the next guy.
And you never find out. There's no line item on your P&L called jobs we lost because nobody picked up at 6:40 a.m. It just doesn't show up as revenue.
Chris Plunkett -an HVAC contractor out of Tucson, grew up in his dad's shop, changed out his first blower motor at eight years old - got tired of being the after-hours bottleneck himself.
His setup now:
Breezy's AI agents handle after-hours and overflow. Every call. No breaks, no queue, no voicemail.
He defined specific trigger words - "flood," "emergency" - that escalate to a live human. Someone just being impatient and demanding a person doesn't get an automatic override.
Calls route to whoever's on the on-call rotation that day, not to him personally. He gets the call notes afterward and stays informed without being the bottleneck.
One customer told his wife she didn't realize she'd been talking to an AI until several minutes in — because it responded with actual empathy.
No matter what you think or do with AI right now, you need to check out this episode:
